As ya'll know from previous blogs, I ummmm lets call it re-located last May. Same city, new house with fewer people.....well I just happen to have run across a 1920's Bungalow on a brick street. Perfect size, perfect color and absolutely the most perfect front porch ever!
Now I am sure you are wondering just exactly why I am raving about this front porch. First of all when I bought the bungalow, the porch had just been painted a fresh coat of white. Not a scratch on any of the 2 by's could be found. It is large enough to hold those southern style potted ferns, a porch swing on the south side and enough room for friends to gather on the north side. I was so proud of my little shiny penny that anytime it got a nick in the paint, I was a freakin' on the inside anyway.
After months of rain, snow, sunshine, you name it the steps on my porch began to look a little worn. Now the old owners being gracious as they were, left me some paint in the basement. So I began to think, I will just whip out that paint and get this to lookin' new and squeaky where you can't tell that anyone has ever stepped foot on it....and then something very heart warming came to mind.
These porch steps are worn for many reasons, one is the seasons, which means I have had the opportunity with my two healthy eyes to see, rain, snow, sleet and hail. It also means I have lived another year and yep I pinched myself and it is true, I am still a kickin'.
Those worn steps mean that many many friends and family have been to my home, and used those two steps to come and see me. Maybe for a cook out, maybe for some shared babysitting, a cup of coffee, a good laugh or to lend out a shoulder to cry on. So needless to say, someday those steps will get painted, just for weathering sake, but I no longer see them as something worn down, I see them as a path that love and friendship travels on.
So, the next time you see something around your homestead gettting a little "weathered" or "tired" take a minute, maybe on your porch, to think why it is in this condition. Just like humans things become battered and used up and aged a little, but as long as we keep those steps open, there will always be someone there to repair us, just a little!
Unsaddling for Now,
C.C.
