Ever wonder when you wake up in the morning, exactly who is providing that good ole' bone building sunshine. Oh we could go into the whole science vs. God thing on it, but this isn't a debate, so I will just go with the latter.
Back earlier this year a friend of the "family", now when I say family, please realize I mean the "cowboy family" had a mighty close call and if it hadn't been for the fancy cellular device hung right there with his saddle bag, well he might be in a different place right now. I don't believe going into the specifics is necessary, it was bad, real bad. And thanks to who I like to call God, a good horse named Pump Jack and that cellular telephone, our Cowboy is still with us today. One leg short of a pair, or at least a human pair, but you never even notice because you can't get past that smile he wears all the time and that soft Oklahoma twang of a voice.
This all happened in early winter of 09. Word spread and action was taken. With Cowboy's permsission a group of friends from the tri-state area spread the word and well a benefit was set into place for September. Now being that Cowboy is an extemely humble person permission was asked first, and to be quite honest, well we are going back to the God thing, because without God, one he wouldn't still be alive and two what took place on a beautiful fall afternoon wouldn't have happened either.
So this family, yes it is a family, a family of ranchers, cowboys, cowgirls and artists all got involved. A ranch rodeo was going to take place, with a little ole' concession, maybe a barbecue dinner and some artist showing off their stuff......yeah well little doesn't describe any of what happened!!!
Picture this: The Osage of Oklahoma (if you haven't ever been there, you need to go!), 21 ranches rolled out to support Cowboy, sponsors ponied up and backed the sell-out barbecue to 250, artist from Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas donated items that raised a lotta' buckeyes, I mean alot! Spectators filled those grand stands with a full belly and ready for some old-fashioned ridin' and ropin' as the sun went down in the Osage. Little cowpokes were running everywhere, roping dummies and having a good ole' time, vendors came and donated beautiful pieces of art, ranging from bracelets, to hobbles, to buckles, to handmade boots to horses. Yes folks one of our own donated a horse! The festivities went late into the night and for some into the wee hours of the morning. Being fortunate enough to be part of this "family" I would just have to stop and look around every once in a while and say "wow", I mean that was the only word for it, "wow".
How fortunate are we? It wasn't just about the change collected at the benefit for Cowboy, it was knowing that there is "family" out there always. It is a shame because some don't understand the "cowboy" way, or unfortunately they get all tangled up with a citified so-called "cowboy" and don't ever get to experience a real cowboy family, but on that beautiful day there was one thing for sure, the "family" seperated the boys from the men and rode for the brand, Cowboy's brand....so to the big guy in the sky until we meet again, I think I will stick with the cowboy family way of life and keep traveling' down happy trails!
